If you're more interested in history, the Danish Welfare Museum is worth a visit. It is Denmark's best-preserved poor farm, which tells the stories of the many people who lived or are living on the dark side of society. If it's art that attracts you, SAK Kunstbygning has a permanent collection of works by sculptor Kai Nielsen and various changing exhibitions.

Enjoy the nature of South Funen

Grab a sandwich from one of the city's many bakeries and take it for a walk in Svendborg's beautiful surrounding nature. Head to Troense, for example, and walk along Troense Strandvej and Grønnegade and discover the numerous listed half-timbered houses from the 1700s. Continue from Grønnegade to Præstealleen and turn right when you reach Slotsalleen, which leads you to the beautifully situated Valdemars Slot. If you have more kilometres in your legs, follow the road along the water and enter Nørreskoven.
