The locals recommend: Thomas Lindqvist Neergaard
About Thomas Lindqvist Neergaard
Priest in Sct. Jørgens Kirke, and member of the satire group MAGT.
32 years old, lives with his wife and two children in the church's official residence.
Comes from Roskilde, and moved from Copenhagen to Svendborg in 2020, where the family found a natural balance between work, home and family life.
Culinary expereiences
Bar 105 in Møllergade has a very special atmosphere that is hard to describe. On weekends it's packed with people of all ages, people from different groups sit at tables, at the bar or wherever there's room, and you're served excellent and tasty tapas, wine and cocktails at absolutely reasonable prices. On Fridays there are always local (and completely unprofessional) guest DJs and a great dance floor.
I also highly recommend the new restaurant Vi To or the slightly more classic restaurant, Thudes, in Frederiksgade with their fish menu and wine list.
Culture
It's no secret that Svendborg is known for its very rich art and cultural scene. Especially during the summer, there are a lot of concerts, and here I would particularly like to highlight the Harders venue. With their concerts ‘Under the sky’, which take place in the cosy and rather intimate courtyard, a mix of well-known and established artists as well as more unknown and upcoming artists play every weekend. The prices are very reasonable and the atmosphere is great.

Nature
Svendborg has plenty of beautiful nature, but you have to go outside the city to find it. The area around Valdemar's Castle has both a forest and a beach, but the nearby village Troense also has a cute harbour and some beautiful and historic streets where it is also possible to get guided tours.
If you want to go swimming, Christiansminde beach is an excellent place not far from the centre. In addition to the beach, there's also a kiosk, mini golf and large grassy areas for different ball games. Otherwise, it's not far to Langeland, which also has some lovely beaches.
When we moved to South Funen, I never managed to hear a single person say anything negative about the place.

The uniqueness of Svendborg
When we moved to South Funen, I never managed to hear a single person say anything negative about the place. On the contrary, everyone across the country seems to agree that Svendborg is a gem. And that's all throughout the year.
Here, you get an exciting shopping and city life, a huge number of cultural offers, beautiful nature and the water close by. It's a provincial town, but the atmosphere is far from dull and boring. On the contrary, there is a huge drive and great local commitment.
There has been a large influx of families with children from Copenhagen in recent years, which is probably due to the fact that you can sense the atmosphere of the bridge districts, but in a calmer setting, and there are many opportunities to build networks through associations and active neighbourhoods.
It was a job-related coincidence that our family ended up here, but now we can't imagine living anywhere else.
When I have guests visiting
Of course they have to see my own church and workplace, Sct. Jørgens Kirke, which is by far the most beautifully situated church in Denmark.
The church and cemetery are right next to the sound and Sct. Jørgens Parken (parc), there is a small beach and bathing jetty close by, and the impressive and beautiful (I think) Svendborg Sound Bridge towers up right next to it.
The church is small, but definitely worth a visit. The mosaics by local South Funen artist Sven Havsteen-Mikkelsen are particularly beautiful and eye-catching. The church is open every day from 8am to 4pm, so you can pop in and take a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Of course, it's also possible to attend a church service every Sunday morning at 10.00am!
If you have children, Naturama or Egeskov Castle are a must. Otherwise, the pedestrian environment, Frederiksøen or a trip on the vintage boat Helge are also a hit with everyone who visits the vicarage.
